About this work

An earthenware jug with a curved handle and a smaller white ceramic pitcher stand at the center, beside a shallow bowl heaped with orange fruit and green-yellow pears. A single lemon and a pear rest separately in the foreground on the tablecloth.

The whole scene is bathed in cool, diffused light against a nearly monochrome grey backdrop, so that the warm ochre of the jug and the orange fruit stand out as the only strong color. Brushwork is loose and dry, dragged across the canvas to suggest folds of cloth and soft reflected light. The result feels airy, quiet and gently luminous.
