About this work
Four slender tree trunks with mottled bark stand in a row across the canvas, branches bare of leaves. Behind them the background glows with an intense wall of color suggesting sunlit autumn foliage or a fiery sky, broken into countless patches of orange, red, yellow, and violet. Low undergrowth covers the ground at the base of the trunks.
Color is pushed beyond naturalistic description into a blazing, patchwork intensity of orange, crimson, gold, and lavender, applied in short, decorative strokes that flatten the background into a glowing mosaic. The dark trunks cut sharply through this field of color for strong graphic contrast. The effect is intense and almost incandescent, more a vision of fire than a literal forest.
