About this work
In a weathered wooden barn, an old bearded man and two women in patterned headscarves gather close together near a bare branch tied with red ribbon. A pale horse's head and a dark bird nesting with eggs appear at the edges, while two Orthodox icon-figures and a bundle of wild mushrooms lie along the bottom, and a translucent white silhouette stands apart at the left.
Warm slivers of golden light cut through the vertical wood grain against cool greys and muted earth tones. Paint is layered thickly with fine linear detail in the faces, textiles and icons, recalling folk-art carving. The huddled figures, hidden faces and pale spectral shape give the scene a hushed, otherworldly stillness.
