About this work

An abundant bouquet of pink and red peonies with a few pale blue blooms fills a dark blue glass vase at the center. On the patterned cloth beside it stand a blue-and-white teapot, a turquoise glass bottle and a footed dish piled with apples, with a single red apple resting on the cloth in front. Flowering branches and green foliage crowd the background, closing the scene into a garden.

Thick, energetic strokes of crimson, pink and white build the peony petals, edges left rough and textured, while cooler blues and greens describe the vessels and leaves. Dappled light picks out highlights on the glass and porcelain. The dense, high-key palette and sculptural brushwork give the still life a lush intensity.
