About this work
Two zones divide the canvas: a smooth, flat field of saturated vermilion-orange fills the left two-thirds, its lower edge broken by a darker triangular shadow. The right portion is built from thick, cracked layers of ochre, bronze and black pigment, carved and scratched into a rough relief, with torn white strips along the top edge and slivers of red flickering through the fissures.
The flat orange plane stays calm and even, contrasting with the encrusted, incised surface beside it. Thick impasto and exposed underlayers give that half a scarred, hide-like quality, its blacks and bronzes catching light unevenly. The pairing of raw, wounded texture against smooth, unbroken color produces a visceral, skin-like intensity.
