About this work
In a dim, candlelit interior, a bearded man in pale robes stands at a stone altar holding a covered vessel, flanked by three veiled women, one lifting her veil aside. To the left, robed clergy and a boy with a censer look on; to the right a young page in a red tunic kneels in prayer beside a kneeling armored knight and a banner-bearer.
The scene is painted in deep browns, muted golds, and touches of crimson, with candlelight picking out faces and fabric against dark, shadowed architecture. Costumes and drapery show detailed academic finish, while the background dissolves into loose, atmospheric brushwork. The kneeling postures and low light give the large canvas a solemn, ceremonial gravity.
