About this work
The canvas is filled almost entirely by the head of an elderly man, his white hair and long beard framing a deeply lined face. His brow is drawn together and his pale eyes look slightly downward past the viewer, giving the sitter a stern, searching expression.
Warm ochre and pink flesh tones are built up in thick, visible strokes against a near-black ground, with strong light striking the forehead and cheekbone while the far side of the face falls into shadow. The heavy impasto and sharp tonal contrast give the portrait a raw, weighty presence.
