About this work
A figure with head tilted sharply back and eyes closed wears a loose white garment that opens at the collar to bare the shoulder and chest. The face is reduced to a few broad marks of light and shadow rather than precise features. The surrounding space is a dark, undefined mass of color rather than a legible room.
Thick impasto and visible palette-knife strokes build the white garment in sharp ridges of paint, catching real light across its surface. Around the figure, patches of ochre, violet, and near-black are scraped and layered wet-into-wet, with little concern for smooth transition. The raw, heavily worked surface and ambiguous pose give the picture a charged, unsettled intensity.
