About this work
An ornate, domed gold icon case shelters a dark-toned icon of the Mother of God holding the Child, small oil lamps hanging beneath its scalloped canopy. In front stands a round brass candle stand crowded with dozens of tall, burning candles, their flames reflected in the polished metal, with a few white flowers placed at the base.
Rendered almost entirely in gold, amber and deep brown-black, the painting draws all its light from the candle flames, which pick out gleaming highlights on the gilded metalwork and the icon's halos while the surrounding church interior recedes into shadow. Detailed, careful brushwork on the ornament contrasts with looser dark passages, producing a hushed, reverent glow.
