About this work
A row of flat-topped, staircase-shaped walls in pale cream and mauve fills the lower half of the composition, their stepped silhouettes repeating across the width of the canvas. Behind rises a bare, softly modeled hillside scattered with clusters of angular grey and white boulders, meeting a plain expanse of blue sky; spiky dark palm fronds intrude into the frame at the lower right.
Rendered with smooth, flat planes and hard-edged geometric shapes, the picture uses a muted pastel palette of dusty rose, sage and lavender under even, shadowless light except for the graphic steps themselves. The simplified, almost architectural handling and stillness of the scene give it a calm, timeless quality.
