About this work
A grotesque, wrinkled face peers down over the top of a large keyhole shape, a giant ear floating beside it. Within the keyhole's dark aperture stand a woman with her hand at her mouth, a small child beside her, and further hidden faces glimpsed lower down. In the distance, a solitary hooded figure walks away across bare ground.
Dense hatching renders the leering face and ear in heavy, textured black strokes, while the figures inside the keyhole are drawn with finer, quieter lines. The spying, oversized features looming over the small domestic figures create a furtive, unsettling mood fitting a scene of watching and gossip.
