About this work
Rows of men and women in suits, ties, and hats stand pressed together, each raising a smartphone flat against the face like an eclipse viewer. Every figure tilts back at the same angle, absorbed in the glowing screen rather than looking up directly. The dense crowd fills the frame edge to edge, with only slivers of dark background between shoulders and hats.
Painted almost entirely in black, white, and grey, the crowd has a newsreel, grisaille look, while each phone screen glows in an isolated patch of color — red, pink, white, near-black. Loose, economical brushwork defines faces and coats with quick tonal contrasts. The uniform gesture and muted crowd against the bright rectangles create a wry, unsettling mood.
