About this work
On a stone bridge and staircase lit by a single lantern, a costumed crowd in masks and eighteenth-century dress gathers for a carnival scene. In the foreground a harlequin in a red-and-white diamond suit plays a guitar before a woman in a powdered wig and pale gown; beside them a black-cloaked masked figure looks on, while more masked couples cluster on the steps above under a heavy gold curtain.
Deep shadow dominates the composition, broken by warm lantern glow and patches of gold, red and cream in the costumes. Paint is applied thickly and loosely, with faces left deliberately indistinct beneath the masks, heightening the theatrical, secretive atmosphere. The overall effect is stagey and enigmatic, as if a fragment of a masked drama has been caught mid-performance.
