About this work
This smaller study repeats a huddled group of musicians, their heads and shoulders reduced to dark rounded silhouettes, with a cello's curled scroll visible at the right. A single illuminated sheet glows pale white-yellow at lower left, the clearest defined shape in an otherwise indistinct, atmospheric space.
Cooler in key than the related composition, the surface is dominated by deep blues and violets shot through with bursts of magenta and turquoise speckling. The handling is sketchy and fluid, with soft-edged forms and scattered flecks of pigment standing in for detail, giving the small panel a hushed, dreamlike, exploratory quality.
