About this work
Dim silhouettes of several musicians are grouped in a dark interior, their forms reduced to simplified dark shapes against a smoky, mottled ground. At the right a cello's scroll and pegbox are faintly outlined, while at lower left a single sheet glows bright pale yellow, the only sharply lit passage in the scene.
The surface is built from smoky washes of crimson, maroon and deep blue scattered with small flecks of colour, giving an almost nebular texture. Forms dissolve into the ground rather than being firmly drawn, and the one lit rectangle anchors the eye amid the surrounding darkness, producing a hushed, mysterious, backstage mood.
