About this work
Along the upper edge, wiry black strokes representing dry grass and stalks rise against a pale, streaked sky, marking a low horizon. Below, a rough brown midground carries faint suggestions of small huts or rooftops half-buried in the scratchy vegetation, before the composition darkens into a dense, near-black foreground mass.
Executed in heavily worked, scraped oil paint, the palette moves from chalky white-grey at the top through ochre and rust to near-black at the bottom. Countless fine scratched lines evoke brittle dry grass and stubble, giving the abstracted landscape a rough, textured, autumnal feel.
