About this work
A nude man sits at left playing a long flute, head tilted toward the instrument, beside a dense stand of tall thistles with pink blossoms filling the centre of the composition. Behind the flowers, a second nude figure stands half-hidden among the leaves, facing outward. Slender tree trunks and thick undergrowth close the scene into a shallow, garden-like space.
Warm ochre and bronze tones for the figures and undergrowth meet cooler teal-blue passages in the sky and shadow, with touches of gold leaf glinting through the leaves. The surface is built up in thick, textured strokes with a raised, sculptural quality, giving the pastoral scene a soft, dreamlike hush.
