About this work

One bare foot rests on a low wooden stool in the foreground while the other leg folds back under the seat, and the bowed head with lowered gaze draws attention to the sharply lit torso, ribs, and forearms.
The figure is built up in soft grey tones on toned paper, with tight cross-hatching describing muscle volume against a spare, undefined background. Light falling from the upper left carves out the abdomen and tendons of the raised arm, giving the study a taut, concentrated feel typical of an academic life drawing.
