About this work
A thick, twisting tree with silvery bark and clusters of dark red foliage dominates the composition, its trunk splitting directly in front of a seated figure so that the head disappears behind the wood. The figure, dressed in red shorts, sits on a low stone bench with bare legs crossed, set against a pale wall and a teal-tiled ground dappled with light and shadow.
Loose, painterly strokes in olive green, slate blue and warm ochre build the foliage and bark, with yellow highlights catching the light through the branches. The brushwork is confident and textured, closer to sketch than finish, and the tree's dense branching across the figure creates a quiet, faintly uneasy sense of concealment.
