About this work
A figure kneels with its back to the viewer, head and shoulders wrapped in a sheet that falls in vertical folds like a hood, while a second length of cloth winds around the torso and crosses at the waist where the clasped hands emerge. The lower body is bare, showing the buttocks and thighs against the black ground, with drapery gathered loosely around the knees.
Strong side lighting picks out the crumpled cloth and the smooth planes of bare skin in warm greys, while the surrounding paper is left pure black. Charcoal is worked from soft blended tone on the flesh to sharply incised lines in the deepest folds, creating a tense, restrained mood.
