About this work
Figures in antique dress populate a bare, wintry garden of leafless trees and small toy-like cages and pavilions: a seated woman in a patterned yellow robe at left, a standing figure in red clutching golden drapery at center, and several reclining, shrouded figures huddled together in the lower right. A large bird and a swirling shell-like form appear among scattered architectural fragments and columns.
Painted in muted, chalky whites, ochres and soft reds with fine, linear detailing, the composition piles motif upon motif without a single clear vantage point or light source. The crowded, overlapping imagery and drifting, ambiguous space produce a disquieting, dreamlike confusion appropriate to its title.
