About this work
A dark band of shoreline with low trees and reeds stretches across the middle of the composition, mirrored almost exactly in the still river below. A solitary figure stands in the shallows, casting a line, his silhouette and rod repeated in the reflection. Above, a thin crescent moon and a few faint stars sit in a pale violet sky.
A narrow palette of dusky violet-grays graduates into near-black silhouettes of land, tree, and figure, with almost no visible brushwork texture. The near-symmetry between sky and water and the small points of light give the scene a hushed stillness. The overall feeling is serene and quietly meditative.
