About this work

An etched, cross-hatched scene shows a nude, pregnant woman seated on a canopied bed, hair loose, eyes lowered toward her belly, while a bearded, crowned man kneels beside her, one hand resting on her shoulder, the other laid gently on her abdomen. A curtained window, a small nightstand with a globe, and draped bed hangings complete the interior.

Rendered in dense black-ink cross-hatching, the print builds soft volume in the woman's skin against the darker, rougher lines of the man's figure. The composition is quiet and intimate, lit from the window at right, giving the biblical encounter a hushed, tender mood.
