About this work
A woman with a thick fall of dark hair looks directly out of near-total shadow, her forearms folded and resting along the bottom edge of the canvas. Only her face, neck and crossed hands catch light, the rest of her dark garment merging into the black background.
Built from thick, dragged strokes of ochre, umber and black, the paint sits in ridges across the cheeks and hands, with brighter cream highlights breaking the darkness. The narrow beam of warm light against the near-black ground gives the sitter an unblinking, confrontational presence.
