About this work
A group of dancers occupies a shallow, undefined space: one sits centrally in a wide, circular tutu while two companions kneel at her feet, perhaps adjusting her shoes, and two more figures stand further back, one walking away in profile. The figures are sketched loosely, their contours barely closed, so that gestures and poses read more clearly than individual faces.
Cool blues and violets wash across the canvas in broad, wet strokes, pooling into a reflective floor at the bottom edge, against a warmer taupe backdrop. Thin white and cream lines pick out an arm, a collar, or the rim of the tutu, and the whole scene has a soft, dreamlike haze, as if glimpsed through low studio light.
