About this work
Several deep pink and red dahlia blooms rise from a cut-glass vase set on a white cloth, with red and pale apples arranged around its base. An ornate wrought-iron support curves behind the flowers, and beyond it a dense screen of garden greenery fills the rest of the composition.
The dahlias are built up with thick, textured strokes of magenta and crimson that stand out sharply against the softer, cooler greens of the background foliage. Bright, filtered daylight models the petals and glass vase with small highlights, giving the still life a fresh, vibrant garden-grown character.
