About this work
A large white cruise liner is viewed bow-on from a river quay, its hull towering over a small green-roofed floating boathouse moored just in front of it; embankment buildings and a stretch of pale sky recede to the left under heavy grey clouds.
Painted in cool blues, greys and whites with only touches of warm ochre on distant buildings, the sky and water are rendered in loose, broad strokes with visible canvas texture; the scale contrast between the tiny boathouse and the towering vessel gives the harbor a quiet, monumental calm.
