About this work
A loose bouquet of flowers, gathered in a pale vase at the base of the canvas, dissolves upward into overlapping patches of color that fill the whole frame. Blossoms and leaves are suggested rather than drawn, with no clear outlines separating individual flowers, stems, or the surrounding surface.
Vivid orange, magenta, and yellow-green are laid on in thick, heavily worked impasto, scraped and dragged so the paint's own texture stands in for petals and foliage. The high-key palette and rough surface give the still life an energetic, almost abstract intensity rather than a calm, descriptive record of flowers.
