About this work
A young woman with pale red hair wears an oversized plumed red hat and low white bodice, holding a violin against her shoulder as she plays. Her dress dissolves into a patchwork of harlequin diamonds in crimson, indigo, teal and gold, echoing carnival costume. In the lower corner a second, masked figure rests against the frame, eyes closed, fingers on a wooden flute.
The surface is built from layered washes and textured mixed media, with mottled indigo and rust grounds standing in for drapery and shadow. Flat, stylized features and decorative, tapestry-like patterning replace conventional modeling, giving the scene a theatrical, dreamlike calm despite the busy costume detail.
