About this work
A striped tablecloth holds a metal moka coffee pot, a glass stand of sugar cubes, a tall glass decanter, and a white footed cup filled with wafer sticks. In front sit a plate with two golden muffins, a small cup of black coffee on its saucer with a spoon, a whole lemon, and scattered red foil-wrapped candies.
Warm ochre stripes of the cloth contrast with the cool greys of glass and metal, and the muffins' golden crust provides the brightest accent. Brushwork is confident and economical, with objects rendered through broad, well-observed patches of light and shadow rather than fine detail, giving the scene the immediacy of a casual morning still life.
