Chinese rose

A tall bouquet of pink hibiscus flowers with dark green leaves fills the center of the composition, set in a shadowed vase on a table. A crystal chandelier hangs above it, and to either side stand a white wicker basket and a tall glass decanter with a stopper. Behind the flowers, diffuse light streams in from an unseen window on the left, while a framed picture and the edge of a chair are visible in the dim room beyond.

The palette is dominated by deep blue-grey shadow against which the magenta and rose-pink blooms glow warmly, accented by touches of yellow light along the window's edge. Paint is applied in thick, energetic strokes, especially in the petals and leaves, giving the bouquet a sense of movement and volume. The interplay of glinting highlights on glass and metal against the muted interior lends the still life a hushed, atmospheric quality.
