About this work

Two heads of Chinese cabbage lie side by side on a rough wooden beam, one whole and upright, the other resting on its side with a loose outer leaf splayed forward. Their pale, ribbed stalks and crinkled green-edged leaves fill most of the frame, isolated against a plain dark backdrop that gives the vegetables monumental presence.

Strong, raking light from the left picks out every vein and fold of the leaves, turning the whites into luminous cream and ivory while the shadowed recesses sink into near-black. The tight, polished brushwork and high contrast give the humble vegetables a sculptural, dramatic weight against the enveloping darkness.
