About this work
A nocturnal riverside view centers on a channel of dark water lit by a warm golden reflection running down its length. The right bank is crowded with dense foliage, its leaves catching pockets of amber and white light against deep violet shadow, while a pale stone ledge or moored boat meets the water at lower right and faint lights glimmer in the distance.
Deep blues, violets and near-black dominate, pierced by warm ochre and white highlights on water and leaves. Thick, scumbled and dragged brushwork builds the textured foliage and rippling surface, and the strong contrast between glowing light and dark masses creates a hushed, atmospheric night mood.
