About this work
A pale, half-dissolved male head hovers at upper left, painted so thinly it merges with the deep blue ground behind it. Beside him, more solidly rendered, a red-haired woman rests her chin on her raised hand, gazing sideways. Before them a jug, a cup with a spoon, and a glass are sketched in loose blue outline across a white tablecloth.
Blue saturates almost the whole canvas, from the near-invisible male figure to the crisp white face of the woman beside him. Her orange hair and pale skin are the only strongly lit passages, painted smoothly beside the loosely scratched still-life objects. The effect is spectral and quiet, as though one figure is memory and the other presence.
