About this work

The image shows a large sawn log viewed end-on, its growth rings radiating outward from a dark central split that fractures into a network of thinner cracks reaching toward the edges. The rounded form of the trunk fills almost the entire canvas, set against a plain, softly toned background with no other objects or setting indicated.

Handling is restrained and nearly monochrome, built from chalky whites, warm greys and faint ochre with the dark cracks left as the strongest value contrast. Brushwork follows the radiating grain in long dry strokes, giving the surface a worn, weathered texture. The composition reads as an abstracted, graphic pattern of a wood surface rather than any coastal or architectural structure.
