About this work
A tall arrangement of white lilies, pale purple irises, feathery blossoms and a cream rose fills a slender glass vase set on a table draped with patterned cloth. In the upper right a hand holds a magnifying glass over the flowers, and at the base a long-tailed bird bends its beak toward an open book and a small dish beside the vase.
Rendered in soft, muted lavenders, creams and sage greens against a hazy warm-grey ground, the flowers are built up with fine glazes and delicate highlights while the background stays loose and atmospheric. The quiet, faded palette and the odd inclusion of the hand and bird give the still life a dreamlike, contemplative quality.
