About this work
A small yellow cabin with a corrugated roof and stovepipe stands on a stony shore beside a vivid turquoise glacial lake, a green tent pitched to its left. Several bundled figures and a black-and-white dog move among the rocks around the hut, while bare, snow-streaked mountain slopes rise steeply behind the water.
The composition is built on a strong contrast between the warm, earthy rust and ochre of the scree slopes and the cool, saturated turquoise of the lake, with patches of white snow left in reserve. Loose, high-key washes of watercolor and tempera and the bright accent of the yellow cabin give the high-mountain camp a vivid, energetic charge.
