About this work
A large round pumpkin fills the upper half of the composition, its ribbed surface glowing against a near-black background. In front rests an old iron steelyard balance with hanging chains and hooks, beside a single white garlic bulb, arranged on a worn, blue-green painted table.
Warm oranges and golds contrast sharply with the cool blue-green table and rusty ironwork. Light falls from one side, carving the metal into hard highlights and deep shadow, while the pumpkin's surface is built from radiating, textured strokes, giving the still life a somber, theatrical presence.
