About this work
A large cluster of green bananas curves down from a thick brown stem at the center of the canvas, the fruit still closed and unripe. Broad, dark green leaves spread behind and below the bunch, and a rough, fibrous tree trunk rises along the left edge. The close, vertical framing crops out any wider setting, concentrating attention on the fruit.
Layered greens, from pale yellow-green on the lit sides of the bananas to near-black shadow between them, are built up with thick, directional strokes that follow the curve of each fruit. Warm ochre and reddish notes in the trunk and background leaves offset the cool greens. The heavy impasto and close cropping give the study a tactile, sculptural, sunlit quality.
