About this work
A half-length study of a young ballerina in a tutu, bent forward at the waist with one hand raised to touch her cheek and the other pressed against her knee. Her tulle skirt flares out behind her as she balances on one pointed foot, a bench or barre faintly sketched in the space behind her.
Soft, blended pencil and chalk shading models her face, arms and hair, set against more crisply hatched folds of tulle in the skirt and tights. The composition is left loosely resolved at the edges, with the paper's own tone standing in for the lightest passages, giving the drawing a tender, introspective, unfinished-sketch quality typical of a study taken from life.
