About this work
The scene captures a moment from a ballet performance: a solitary female dancer in a pale flowing costume twists mid-step at the left, arm raised, while at center a tall figure in a dark military-style coat stands with fist clenched. Behind them a cluster of dancers in light dresses and warm highlights emerges from deep shadow, suggesting a crowded stage grouping around the central confrontation.
Rendered almost entirely in near-black browns and blacks, the canvas is broken by pools of golden and amber light that pick out faces, hands, and fabric folds. Brushwork is loose and gestural, with thick dabs suggesting movement and stage smoke rather than describing detail, giving the whole an urgent, theatrical charge.
