About this work
A thicket of fan-shaped palm leaves crowds the entire canvas, their spiky fronds radiating from unseen trunks in overlapping layers. Small patches of exposed ground and a hint of turquoise water appear at the lower edge, but no sky, horizon or figures interrupt the tangle of vegetation.
Deep blackish-green and teal dominate the palette, punctuated by hot streaks of orange, red and yellow that read as sunlit fronds or hidden blossoms glowing through the shade. The oil pastel is applied in dense, layered strokes that build a rough, woven texture, giving the tangle an enclosed, moody, almost nocturnal density.
