About this work
A woman is shown in profile, her hair braided and beaded. Balanced on her head is a large woven basket that opens onto a detailed miniature scene of thatched huts, a whitewashed church tower, cacti and trees, with tiny figures and an animal moving among the buildings. The basket's contents read like a whole remembered village compressed into a single vessel she carries.
The background glows in saturated reds and oranges around a pale halo behind her head, while the village inside the basket is painted in cooler blues, greens and whites with looser, more gestural brushwork. Warm and cool passages contrast sharply, and the layered, dreamlike scene inside the basket gives the portrait a quiet, nostalgic mood.
