About this work
A tangle of leafless oak and birch trunks and branches fills the upper two-thirds of the composition, silhouetted against a pale, cloudy sky with a hint of hazy water or distance beyond the trees. The foreground ground is covered in mossy green tufts, fallen orange leaves and dark earth.
The sky is built from soft greys and whites, while the trunks range from warm russet to cool grey-brown, painted with vigorous, dragged brushstrokes and dabs of pure color in the undergrowth. The bare branches and muted light give the scene a still, melancholic late-autumn atmosphere.
