About this work
A broad field of long grass fills the foreground, painted in interwoven strokes of pink, ochre, teal and green that suggest sun and shadow moving across the ground. Along the horizon a narrow line of birches turns yellow-orange with early autumn color, and beyond them a pale strip of water or sky opens under a heavy, overcast sky.
Thick palette-knife ridges of paint build every surface, laying warm ochre against cool teal without blending so that color, not outline, carries the form. The rough, tactile surface and broken brushwork give the scene an energetic, sun-warmed feel despite the muted grey sky above.
