About this work

Two stacked scenes depict the same sturdy tree growing inside a low fenced enclosure and braced by wooden support posts. In the upper panel the tree is full of rounded leafy foliage while a small four-legged animal noses the ground beside it; in the lower panel the identical tree stands bare-branched and leafless, with a slender animal walking away from its base.

Fine etched lines build the dense canopy through overlapping stipple and hatching, left stark against the pale, largely empty paper around each tree. Displayed one above the other, the two panels read as a quiet before-and-after study of the changing season, understated and contemplative.
