About this work
A pale, near-white stag with tall branching antlers stands at the center of a dark birch grove, head turned back over one shoulder. A bleached animal skull hangs from a branch at upper left, and a dark, crouching hooded form occupies the lower right, half-dissolved in shadow among the tree trunks.
Saturated red dominates ground and background, laid in dry, dragged strokes that leave the canvas weave visible, while the birch bark is scraped back to near-white highlights.
