About this work
A young mother sits with her head bowed, wrapped in a shawl patterned in violet, blue and gold, holding a small child who has fallen asleep against her chest, one hand curled near the mouth. The pair is set close to the picture plane, filling most of the canvas, with only glimpses of a chair and drapery behind them.
Warm maroons, plums and ochres dominate, applied in thick, visible strokes and loaded impasto that read as abstract pattern up close and resolve into fabric and flowers from a distance. Light falls softly on the faces while the background dissolves into a shimmering, textured curtain, producing a tender, hushed mood.
