About this work
Seen mostly from behind, a man in a wide hat and long pale coat carries a brush and small palette as he moves beside a woman in a loose cream dress; between them sits a basket piled with apples. Behind the pair a rose-roofed village climbs a hillside toward a tall stone viaduct spanning the valley.
The canvas is built from soft, sun-bleached washes of ochre, rose, lavender and cream, with forms flattened into large simplified planes rather than detailed modeling. Light falls evenly across the scene, and the muted, hazy palette lends the pastoral moment a quiet, contemplative warmth.
