About this work
The composition is a close architectural view of an old building's entrance: a rust-colored, recessed doorway with a small hanging sign and ring handle sits beneath a snow-capped ledge, while an arched, grated window shows at the right and a shadowed niche at the left. Snow mounds along the roofline and on the ground, and a cloth-wrapped barrel or crate rests in the foreground, dusted with white.
Warm burnt-orange, ochre, and sienna walls dominate, set off by cool white snow and grey-blue shadow. Light is soft and diffuse, and the paint is built up in thick, textured strokes with the canvas weave showing through, giving the surface a weathered, tactile quality. The mood is quiet and timeworn, an intimate corner of an old town under snow.
